Description
The TIP120 and TIP122 are NPN Darlington power transistors designed for medium- to high-power switching and amplification applications. They consist of two NPN transistors internally connected in a Darlington configuration, providing very high current gain (typically around 1000), which allows small input currents to control larger loads.
These transistors come in a TO-220 package, making them easy to mount on heatsinks for improved thermal performance and suitable for both prototyping and permanent installations.
The TIP120 typically supports up to 60V collector-emitter voltage, while the TIP122 can handle up to 100V, giving flexibility depending on application requirements. Both variants can handle continuous collector current up to 5A and higher peak currents, making them suitable for driving motors, relays, and other high-power loads.
Thanks to their high gain, these transistors can be driven directly from logic-level outputs such as Arduino or microcontrollers, simplifying circuit design. They also feature low saturation voltage and reliable switching performance, making them effective in both linear and switching circuits.
